A gearing ratio compares a company’s equity to its debt. It demonstrates the degree to which a company’s activities are funded by shareholder funds versus creditor funds. Gearing ratios are used to assess how a company structures itself and the amount of risk involved with its chosen capital structure. Gearing ratios include debt-to-equity, debt-to-capital and debt-service ratios.
